Nam On Child Care Centre

The Nam On Child Care Centre Project in Nam On Village, Guangdong Province, China will provide care and nurturing for orphaned children. The child care centre will be a model environment, demonstrating best practices in child care, health, social and intellectual development.

The Child Care Centre site will be situated on 20 acres of undeveloped land which has been donated by the villagers. In addition to provision of the 125-child living, learning and play space, programs will be developed and delivered to enhance the social, intellectual and emotional health of the children. In keeping with the philosophy of “it takes a village to raise a child”, village youth, adults and elders in the community will be encouraged to interact with the children in the child care centre in formal and informal settings.

Sustainable building practices and technologies that are friendly to adults and children and compassionate to the planet will be used to construct the centre and renovate the seniors’ facility. Instruction will be provided to villagers in the use of these technologies and environmental practices in general. Sustainable gardening methods will be instituted throughout the village, increasing available food sources for the children and the village. Overall village sustainability will be addressed; cottage industries, tourism and market opportunities will be increased.
